Darragh Byrne has worked for over 25 years in film making of every kind. He has worked on two Oscar nominated Animated Feature films Song of the Sea and The Breadwinner- the latter was produced by Angelina Jolie. He was nominated twice for Annie Awards in Editing the Oscars for animation as well as a Canadian Screen Award Nominee for The Breadwinner. He recently finished working on Wolfwalkers which stars Sean Bean which will be Apple’s first animated feature film. Darragh sees the art of editing storyboards as all about emotion and how you pace a film can either make a laugh or cry depending on how well paced the film is which sometimes can be about the exact frame where you cut. Starting off in Live Action for famous American Film Producer Roger Corman in Galway Darragh learned his craft from Hollywood editors. He then moved to London where working in BBC he learned the old school style of editing documentary from some of the best editors in that field. Moving back to Ireland he worked in Dublin as an assistant editor on feature films in Screenscene but then working for Youth Irish Film Makers he began working for Cartoon Saloon the most prestigious animation company in Ireland for 8 years. He was lucky enough while there to be mentored by Darren Holmes (Ratatouille, How To Train Your Dragon) who he is proud to share a credit with on Wolfwalkers. Now based in Belfast where he edits both documentary and animation he is still learning everyday himself how to be a better storyteller and hoping like all editors that each time he cuts it is on the right frame. As someone who has been fortunate with many great teachers of his own in his career he would like to pass some of that knowledge on.
